Career coaching is defined by the International Coaching Federation (ICF) as “partnering” with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.” The key is the focus is on empowering the client to get the most out of their personal and professional potential. This requires that the coach views their clients as being naturally creative/resourceful and capable of having their own answers. This involves a “teach a man to fish” kind of approach as opposed to problem solving for others. If coaching is done right it can be a life changing experience for clients. Here are 3 ways career coaching can impact a person’s life in a positive way.

  1. Client Learns They Can Solve Their Own Problems – Consultants take a different approach to working with clients. Consultant’s view themselves as experts and clients as needing help, advice, and answers. Remember, Career Coaching is a partnership approach, and coaches view clients as being capable of solving their issues. During this process clients are empowered. They learn that they can solve complex problems and look at challenges as opportunities for growth. When challenges arise in the future, clients that have worked with a career coach will pull the skills that they discovered during the coaching process and put them to good use. If you have no input into the plan and process of achieving your career goals, more than likely you won’t feel empowered even as you reach goals. If the relationship between coach and client is a hierarchical one and the client feels they have no voice as it relates to plans and strategies related to reaching their goals, they will need to contact the coach every time they need to make a decision.

  1. Empowered to Help Others – “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” I love this quote because it embodies everything I stand for. Aiding people to take care of themselves is what coaching is all about. Once you are empowered you can then help others. Coaching should provide an avenue for people to realize their strengths and hopefully they can help someone else in need.

  1. Get Your Career On Track – One of the main purposes of career coaching is to help people get their careers on track. Whether or not you are looking to advance your career, break into a new industry, or you are getting interviews but not securing jobs, coaching can help you reach your goals.

The coach is empowered as well. They learn how to expand their ability to help others improve. The coach is learning new ways to engage clients, pull out their strengths, and help them build confidence they can provide solutions to situations they may face. When done correctly, coaching is a great partnership for both parties.
