I myself have had tons of jobs that I’ve hated. I always knew that cleaning hotel rooms and wearing a huge bounty hat while doing mall security just wasn’t for me. There are people all around the world that are not in the right field, but just in case you’re unsure whether or not you’re one of those people, I’ve put together a list of signs that signal that you are definitely in the wrong field. If these signs apply to you then it’s time for a new direction, and I would love to help you get on the correct path.
You Hate Going to Work – The most obvious sign that you are not in the right career field is that you dread going to work. As soon as you get off work on Friday you begin hating the idea of going back on Monday. There is nothing more miserable than having a job that you hate. You know you don’t want to go, but you have to pay your bills. If this is you it’s time to get out and do something you really enjoy.
You Are Always Tired – Going to a job that you don’t like takes up a lot of your energy and it is very draining. When you are doing what you love you normally feel energized. When I speak to people who are not doing what they love on a regular basis, they often say they are always tired and lack energy and enthusiasm. I think the mental aspect of going to a place you hate weights on a person even more than the physical aspect of working. The anxiety from feeling “stuck” in a position can lead to actual health concerns. When you are not mentally healthy it can lead to actual physical health issues as well.
You Have Held Multiple Jobs in Various industries – You’ve worked in housekeeping, manufacturing, customer service, and now you are in the nursing industry and thinking about going into law. Does this sound familiar? People that don’t know what they are passionate about often lack focus. People that know their F.I.T. (Fulfillment, Identity, and Thirst) as it relates to their career, don’t waste time doing things they are not passionate about. People that know their F.I.T are also not distracted by opportunities that come their way that don’t align with their interests and goals—so they don’t have jobs all over the place in various fields.
You Are Not Performing Well at Work – If you have not been performing well at work for a prolonged time, chances are you are not in the right field. Of course there are other factors that can affect your work performance. Life events such as a death of a close loved one or the birth of a new child can affect your performance, but it should not happen on a prolonged basis. When you are in the right career field you will have success in your career more than likely because you have a passion and a natural talent to do so.
You Frustration Spills Over To Other Areas of Your Life – If you are anything like me, your career plays a big part in your life. Unfortunately, most of the positions that I have held in the past have not been a good fit for my values and career goals. In fact, I don’t know if I will ever find an actual positon that is a perfect match for me since my goal is ultimately to run my business full-time. Entrepreneurs know of the struggle of working for organizations, but longing to work on their own projects. When you are frustrated about your job, it can spill over to other areas of your life. You may have arguments with your spouse, be upset with your children, not want to be around others, and you may even find yourself always mad about something. At the time, you may not recognize that it is you that is projecting your anger onto the people around you. If you find yourself in this situation it is time to do something quick. No job is worth your relationships being adversely affected.
If any of these signs apply to you and you are unsure of how to get out of the situation, I would love to help you. I will be conducting my Finding Your F.I.T. workshop again in the near future, but if you can’t wait for that, I am more than willing to work with you on an individual level to discover what you are passionate about and get you on the road to career happiness. We spend way too much time at work to be unhappy on a regular basis. Don’t waste time doing things that you don’t love. For assistance send me an email to firstname.lastname@example.org and I will be in contact.
