What Drives You?

What drives you is very important to your career. Are you driven to help people? Do you like to teach? Maybe you love to create, or enjoy writing. Defining the source of where your energy comes from is one of the most important things that you can do for your life and career. The following are questions that will hopefully assist in helping you to find your driving force. Once you figure out your personal answer, you will be well on your way to securing a fulfilling life and future.

What are Your Values?

I am amazed that so many people don’t know what their values are. More than likely, this happens because individuals simply haven’t taken the time to find out what’s important to them. Paying attention to how you react to various situations over time can help you understand your values. Another good way to gauge what your values are is to simply do a values exercise. Perform a Google search for values exercises and complete the activities. Knowing your values is not only important to your career but in life in general. If you know your values it will help when choosing a mate, dealing with ethical situations, and setting goals.

What Do You Care About?

Figuring out the things that you are most passionate about can be hard at times. We have so many things that we care about that it seems impossible to focus on them all. The key is to discover what people, causes, and activities we care most about and focus our energy towards that. You also have to figure out what needs you like to meet. Some people care about meeting people’s physical needs, such as food or shelter. Others are more concerned with individual’s emotional, spiritual, and relational needs. Still some see educational, or vocational needs as being most important. Ask yourself what cause or issue makes your heart race. If time wasn’t a factor  what would you devote yourself to?

What Are Your Natural Abilities?

Discovering what you are naturally good at is not that hard if you take the time to pay attention to yourself. What activities are you naturally drawn to? Focus on activities that people will pay you to do or that you can market to others. So just because you can do back flips does not mean you should try to make it a career.  Write a list of ten things you love to do and break them down to your top 3. Take a look at your current commitments to see where you can put those natural abilities to good use.

Finding out what drives you is very important to your career and life. Once you discover what drives you, you can determine what direction to go in. Having direction allows you to experience fulfillment each day. Without knowing what drives you, you may find yourself wandering from job to job without ever finding joy in what you do. Figure out what drives you and you will be happy moving forward.
